It was November 2014. We were in Latvia. It was snowing outside. And we had an idea – to escape the winter in Europe without going too far from Europe. But how to do it? Where to go and is it even possible without spending too much money? Few days of research and we knew it – we need to go to Canary Islands.

We opened Workaway.info and started to look for volunteering opportunities in Canary Islands. We felt lucky as choice was quite wide, and we started to write to these people. We contacted more than 20 of them, but… answers were always the same – “we don’t need any help right now” or “we are full”.

But then, about a month later, an e-mail from our friend Clive (read our interview with Clive) changed everything. At the time of writing that e-mail Clive was volunteering in holiday houses in Canary Islands and he asked us – if we would be interested to go to the same place? Yes! Yes! Yes!

On January 1 we got the final confirmation – that we can come – and 10 minutes later we bough flight tickets to Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands.

It was cloudy afternoon of February 6, when we arrived on the island. Elvira picked us up at the airport. And together we drove to the southern part of Fuerteventura. Our first stop was Spanish restaurant in a small village, some kilometers from our house. In the restaurant we met other volunteers and had a nice dinner together.

On the next morning we started to work. And our first task was to clean one house. On the property where we were staying there were 4 holiday houses available for long and short term rent. And soon we got to know, that Elvira is renting out also one part of her house in the nearby village.

Some time ago we were interviewed and then there was a question: “How do you make yourself feel at home wherever you go?”. We answered: “If the place, people, and atmosphere are the right one, we start to feel like at home very quickly.” And that’s how we soon started to feel there in this place. We started to feel like at home, working together with friends.

At the end we spent in this beautiful place more than 3 months. Escaping cold European winter and spring as we wanted.

What Were Doing:

  • Looking after the holiday houses. Cleaning houses and territory around, welcoming guests. Helping to organize parties.
  • Helping with small repairs, construction works and gardening.
  • Helping with the website and rental websites.
