Ok, so the best travel shoes for men. What is it exactly that we understand by this? After 4 years (and counting) of traveling this is what I have come up with. First of all, these should be very comfortable shoes that are suitable for long walks. The same with walking sandals for travel. Unless you are 100% sure you aren’t going to walk around almost at all. At the same time it’s great if these shoes are lightweight, compact and durable. The latter being second most important factor here. The rest depends from person to person and what kind of travels are you getting ready for.

No, travel shoes doesn’t necessarily mean hiking shoes.

I would even say, that in most of the situations it’s exact opposite. You don’t need hiking shoes to go sightseeing around the city. And even if you are going to walk around a lot. You don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort. Take, for example, the Clarks Desert Trek Chukka Boot (see on Amazon). Or if you are into minimalist shoes then consider the versatile Xero Shoes Hana (see on Amazon).

But, of course, for some it’s exactly what will suit their needs the best. And, so, you’ll find few of the best hiking shoes in this article as well. Just scroll down and you’ll find them! They are at the bottom.

Best Travel Shoes for Men

Now let’s look at the list of the best travel shoes for men!

All these great travel shoes I have grouped by style into 3 groups – Multi-Purpose, Everyday, Hiking.

Best Walking Shoes for Travel: Multi-Purpose Footwear

1. Olukai Nohea Mesh Shoe

Versatile, lightweight everyday shoes, that are going to last.

Shoes inspired by the feeling of bare feet in wet sand. Thanks to drop-in heel you can use these shoes both as regular shoes and slide sandals. The Olukai Nohea are made of microfiber mesh, which breathes when the shoes are dry and drains when they get wet. And that’s a really nice feature to have if you are traveling to the tropics, where getting into heavy rain is something that does happen. At least with these shoes you’ll not need to walk around with wet feet for too long. As they dry very fast.

Sole of these shoes is made of non-marking rubber. And their special OluKai footbed is removable and washable. Is the Olukai Nohea the best travel shoes for men? For my needs – almost. If you aren’t traveling during winter and aren’t too much into hiking, I don’t see why wouldn’t they be the best for you? Only if you don’t really like the design.

Best for easy day hikes, beach and everyday life.

Colors: 10+ colors.

Size (US): 7 – 14.

Size (EU): 39 – 48 (246 – 305 mm).

2. Xero Shoes Hana

Minimalist design, barefoot-inspired everyday shoes.

Lightweight and flexible, providing the same comfort and versatility you can get with the popular Xero Shoes sandals (see them here) in a casual looking canvas shoe.

The Xero Shoes Hana have so called zero-drop sole, that’s made of rubber. If you are familiar with barefoot running you’ll know that it means completely flat, thin, non-elevated sole. It might be something you need to get used to at first. I know from my personal experience. As well as it might not be your thing at all whether because of how it feels (almost like going barefoot) or because of medical reasons. Other than that these are one of the best walking shoes for travel.

It’s quality soles, that are backed by Xero Shoes 5000 mile warranty. Read more about it on the website of Xero Shoes. Shoes feature an interesting lacing system, that’s very similar to one you’ve seen in sandals. No animal products have been used in the manufacturing process.

Best for easy day hikes and everyday use. Same like the Olukai Nohea these shoes aren’t suitable for cold weather.

Colors: Black, Brown/Black, Sand/Chocolate, Black/Rust.

Size (US): 6.5 – 13.

Size (EU): approx. 39 – 47 (approx. 246 – 296 mm).

3. Rockport Men’s We are Rockin Chranson Walking Shoe

Casual men’s walking shoes, ready for all kind of daily adventures.

First things first, these aren’t hiking shoes. Even though they may look a bit like such. However, they can be used also for hiking. For a bit more technical day hikes and rougher terrain, if we compare them to the both previous ones. Simply because they are quite sturdier themselves and because of the increased grip they provide. The Rockport Men’s We are Rockin Chranson shoes are made of leather. They feature a synthetic sole with rubber EVA outsole and latex footbed.

Best for active everyday use, sightseeing, as well as day hikes. Winter-ready travel shoes.

Colors: Black, Dark Brown/Black.

Size (US): 7 – 14.

Size (EU): 39 – 48 (246 – 305 mm).

Best Travel Shoes for Men: Everyday Shoes

4. Hush Puppies Men’s Lunar II

Casual everyday men’s shoes, made of full-grain tumbled leather.

Even though the Hush Puppies weight about the same like other similar leather shoes – approx. 26 oz each (740 g) – and if you wear these kind of shoes, you’ll be already used to it, I would say, that it’s quite a lot. And you may want to reconsider other options as well. Especially if you are traveling to a warm destination. Otherwise these are good shoes for everyone who walks a lot and treasures comfort.

As that’s exactly what these shoes are all about – comfort. The Lunar II feature a removable, contoured EVA footbed. It’s soft cushioned and provides a great comfort. Thanks to their soft moisture-wicking lining your feet will stay dry. If you don’t really like this exact design, Hush Puppies have more than a few other options of casual and highly comfortable walking shoes.

Best for active everyday use and sightseeing. Winter-ready walking shoes.

Colors: Dark Brown, Brown, Black.

Size (US): 7 – 15.

Size (EU): 39 – 49.5 (246 – 314 mm).

5. Clarks Originals Men’s Desert Trek Chukka Boot

Classic design men’s walking boots, made of suede full grain leather.

This exact design from Clarks has been around for few decades already. So chances are you’ve already owned ones. As mentioned earlier, these boots from Clarks is one of the best choices if you want a mix of both – style and comfort. Because you don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort. Same like the Hush Puppies these are the shoes that you’ll like because of that extra comfort they give you and your feet. If you have big feet you’ll like that roominess you have with the Clarks.

Outsole of these boots is finished with natural rubber, called also crepe rubber, providing great shock absorption and giving them that unique look.

Best for everyday use and sightseeing.

Colors: 7 colors.

Size (US): 7 – 14.

Size (EU): 39 – 48 (246 – 305 mm).

6. New Balance Men’s MW877

Classic design everyday walking shoes.

Apart apart from the sporty look these are regular walking shoes with flat rubber soles. And because of the latter I wouldn’t recommend you to use them for even short day hikes, because the traction on the trail definitely isn’t going to be the best. The shoes are made of suede leather and mesh fabric. And they feature padded tongue and collar.

The midsole of the MW877 is padded using Abzorb® cushioning, which is New Balance’s proprietary basic cushioning compound.

Best for active day to day use, long walks and sightseeing.

Colors: Grey.

Size (US): 7 – 15.

Size (EU): 39 – 49.5 (246 – 314 mm).

Best Hiking Shoes for Men

One of the most important things to remember, when you are searching for hiking shoes, is  that there is no such a thing as the best hiking shoes for everyone. The same as there is no one best hiking shoes for all kind of trails. Trails differ. Conditions differ. Seasons should be taken into account. As well as weather conditions. And we differ, too.

Here I’m going to show you 4 hiking shoes, that all are among the best in their own way. For example, Salomon’s are one of the lightest hiking shoes you can find (if you take into account the quality and protection they provide). They are also the ones I personally really like, if not for anything else then simply because they are SO light, quick drying and comfortable. But they clearly aren’t for everyone. And some wouldn’t even call them hiking shoes.

Understand your needs first and make your own judgement!

7. Merrell Men’s Moab Ventilator Hiking Shoe

Classic design summer hiking shoes for men, which have been around for more than a decade already. One of the most reviewed and best rated hiking shoes online.

These shoes are made of water-resistant leather and mesh fabric. And they feature a rubber toe bumper, as you can also see in the photo. Thanks to the Vibram Multi-Sport outsole (TC5+ rubber) the Merrell Men’s Moab offer really great grip on all kind of surfaces and you can be sure, that theses soles are going to last. Actually you may also end up with completely worn out shoes, but with a sole, that looks like you could use it for a couple more years. Shoes feature Air Cushion midsole.

Best for active day to day use and hiking. Not suitable for cold weather and snow or ice.

Colors: 10 colors.

Size (US): 7 – 14.

Size (EU): 39 – 48 (246 – 305 mm).

8. KEEN Men’s Targhee II Hiking Shoe

Slightly higher (compared to the Merrell’s) low-cut all season hiking shoes.

These are the shoes you will need if you plan on hiking not only during the summer, but also in autumn, spring and possibly winter. Why possibly? Because for winter only and very low temperature hiking they may not be warm enough. However, you’ll be perfectly fine on short multi-day winter hikes, walking on snow and ice.

The shoes are made of leather and are waterproof. They feature a padded tongue and collar, and lugged rubber outsole. Being sturdy hiking shoes they are still very much lighweight – each shoe weights about 15.4 oz / 436.6 g. For example, the Salomon’s you see below weight about 10.9 oz or 310 grams, but aren’t as sturdy as the Targhee II.

Best for hiking. Winter-ready hiking shoes.

As recommended by the manufacturer – buying these exact shoes, better order a slightly larger size than usually!

Colors: 5 colors.

Size (US): 7 – 15.

Size (EU): 39 – 49.5 (246 – 314 mm).

9. The North Face Men’s Ultra 109 GTX Hiking Shoe

Lighweight and affordable all-terrain hiking shoes that are built to last.

Similar like the Salomon Speedcross 4 these aren’t your ordinary hiking shoes. They aren’t the most durable shoes out there, neither are they waterproof. But they are lightweight and extremely comfortable, giving you the freedom of movement you will not get with other bulkier and heavier hiking shoes and boots.

The shoes have a PU-coated leather and mesh upper, a padded tongue and GORE-TEX® waterproof breathable membrane. Feature feature a full-length compression-molded EVA midsole. The outsole of these shoes is made of UltrATAC rubber. One shoe weights approximately 15.5 oz (438 g), while Salomon’s – about 10.9 oz or 310 grams.

Has won Editors’ Choice Award 2017 (Outdoor Gear Lab).

Best for hiking, trail running and long distance walking.

Colors: 6 colors.

Size (US): 7 – 14.

Size (EU): 39 – 48 (246 – 305 mm).

10. Salomon Men’s Speedcross 4 Trail Runner

Ultra-light, all-terrain trail running shoes built for rough conditions.

Some may not agree, that these are hiking shoes after all. Yes, they are called trail running shoes. However, what’s important here is that they are built for trails, and also technical trails. The Speedcross 4 are made of water resistant textile, anti-debris mesh and feature a mud guard in the front and on the sides.

If you want to go fast and light, take the Salomon Speedcross 4.

In 2016 I bought the previous model – Speedcross 3 – myself, because I needed something for hiking Annapurna Circuit in Nepal. I’ve never liked hiking boots. I knew I’ll be fine without boots on this hike. So I looked for some low profile quality shoes. And I found the Speedcross 3.

If these people can run 100+ miles in these shoes in the mountains, trough mud and snow, they I should definitely be OK hiking in these. That’s what I told myself, when I learned that these are the shoes world’s top trail runners are using, and I was right. I was more than OK during this 200+ mile (320 kilometer) hike in Nepal. They are so light and so comfortable! And the Speedcross 4 is even better than its predecessor. Are they the best hiking shoes for men? For me – mostly yes. If you are used to low profile shoes and the hike allows for that, give these shoes a try!

The biggest drawback of the previous model was that the outsole was prone to wear down rather quickly, if you were using them on tarmac or similar hard surface. Well, of course, these are trail running shoes not road running shoes. Anyway, that’s something that’s now improved as well. Remember that if you’ll be thinking which model to choose. I would highly recommend you to go for the Speedcross 4!

One more thing – Salomon’s quick lace system is great!

Best for hiking, trail running and long distance walking.

Best Lightweight Shoes

Dreamcity Men’s Water Shoes

Lightweight, breathable and cheap shoes for the beach and not only.

Indeed these aren’t the only one and the best lightweight shoes. But I thought I would mention one good option. Because sometimes it’s just exactly what you need. Something light, that looks OK and that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Like these Dreamcity shoes.

Thanks to the outsole’s design you can expect great traction also in wet conditions. Not without a reason they are called water shoes. One downside, though, these aren’t the fastest drying shoes. Yes, they dry relatively fast, and water goes through immediately. But that’s because of the design of the shoe, not because the material is fast drying. It isn’t.

Best for beach, sightseeing, water sports like kayaking and rafting.

Colors: 10+ colors.

Size (US): 7 – 14.

Size (EU): 39 – 48 (246 – 305 mm).
