Some call them travel power adapters. Others – simply travel adapters. What’s important that everyone is talking about the same useful, small and often irreplaceable piece of travel gear.
So why do you need a travel adapter? In different countries around the world electricity sockets differ. In total there are 15 different sockets in use (you can see all of them here). And travel adapter let’s you to use them, and to charge your electronics. You plug in the adapter into the socket first, and then you can plug in your electronics into it – using the same power cable you use at home.
There are very simple travel adapters and there are more advanced ones. The latter usually have also 2, sometimes 4 or more USB ports, letting you to charge several devices at once. Most of the best travel adapters could be used almost everywhere in the world. They come with (or have built-in) several different plugs. In the table below I have also marked, for which countries and regions are these travel adapters suitable.
And then there are also travel voltage frequency converter, that are designed to help you to use your American appliances in Europe and vice versa. But since most of the electronics nowadays are dual voltage you mostly don’t need these anymore.
American appliances run on 110 volts, while European appliances are 220 volts. Today’s gadgets are “dual voltage,” which means they work on both American and European current. If you see a range of voltages printed on the item or its plug (such as “110–220”), you’re OK in Europe. Some older appliances have a voltage switch marked 110 (US) and 220 (Europe) — switch it to 220 as you pack. (Source: Rick Steves)
Best Travel Adapters
Now let’s take a look at the list of the best travel power adapters!
You can filter these travel adapters by the number of USB ports they have, price level and what region or regions are they made for. Some of them are even available in several colors. For more photos, latest price and user reviews check them out on Amazon – just click on the name or image of the adapter you want to know more about! I have also included a link to Amazon under every review.
Note: the most popular plug in Europe – Type C – is widely used also in South America and Asia. In the table above I have marked it as EU.
How to Choose the Best Travel Adapter for Yourself?
To find the right travel adapter, answer these 2 questions first:
1. How Many and What Kind of Electronic Devices You Are Traveling With?
Why it’s important? There are travel power adapters that have ONLY USB ports. Meaning that you will not be able to connect let’s say your laptop’s charger to it. At the same time, if you have only a laptop and a phone, then even the simplest and cheapest travel adapter plug will do the job. Like this one from Ceptics on Amazon.
Next – if you are traveling with more than 2 electronic devices or you are 2 people traveling together, then look at something with 4 USB connections + preferably an outlet or two. Sometimes there is just one outlet available, and then having an adapter that you can use to charge several devices comes in handy.
2. Where will you be traveling?
As I already mentioned, most of the best travel adapters can be used almost everywhere in the world.
If you are traveling frequently, chances are that you already have one travel adapter. If not – think about where will you be traveling in the nearest future, and look for something that covers your needs. If you are not sure, where will you be traveling then get one, that has plugs for the most popular regions of the world – US, UK, Europe and Australia.
Which Is the Best Travel Adapter for Europe?
There are 3 types of plugs used in Europe.
Type C – the most popular one. It’s being used in most of European countries, as well as in South America and Asia. In the table above you can see it marked it as EU.
Type L – Italy.
It’s absolutely not a problem to find a travel adapter with Type C and Type G plugs. Do you want a cheap one? Take a look at Yubi Power European Plug Adapter (only Type C) or Ceptics Travel Adapter Plug (you can choose Type C, Type G, and also Type L …)! A better one? Then we recommend: Syncwire Wall Charger, YXwin USB Charger Plug, ESYWEN Travel Power Adapter. None of these, though, 3 has Type L plug. You can see all of them in the table above!
